I know INFAR, KABO, and Apex are the most frequently cited suppliers for Made In Taiwan rebrands sold here in the US. I'm very pro-US but I need some cheap sockets that aren't likely to grow legs for a specific use so US made is out. I've got the urge to try out a mail-order brand because I don't expect to break any 1/4 drive sockets. I've always operated under the premise that all modern "Made in Taiwan" tools are basically the same quality and it really just comes down to price, availability, and warranty.

After looking at the Catalog, it looks like INFAR probably makes Pittsburgh Pro sockets because the premade set size ranges line up, as do the color coded sockets.

Is Stanley BD making DeWalt and Craftsman, or are they subcontracting those out? Are they the same sockets marked differently? Who do we all think is the current source of Capri sockets? How about Tekton? Is Infar still supplying Carlyle? Olsa? To avoid these ads, REGISTER NOW!

Does it really matter?
Probably not, but this is a tool forum and people come here to talk about tools, including all kinds of nuanced things that non-tool people don't care about.

And here's the kicker: they're allowed to do that! Just like you're allowed to ignore the thread if you don't find it interesting.

I wouldn't put Pittsburgh in with these guys. Just doesn't feel quite on par.

Frankly, when it comes to the brands mentioned, I care more about the "set", and how it's "packaged". Tekton really wins here. They have some really nice, well thought out sets. I *really* like my little 1/4" drive, metric-only socket set in its blow molded case. I get a lot of use out of that in my "junkyard bag".

When buying a $50 tool set, I just don't care about warranty. Just buying a replacement is too easy. Where I live, mail order wins. Why burn up $10 in gas to exchange a $2 HF item?

Olsa and Capri are fine as well. Just a bit more limited in options. Of course, Olsa has the sweet "Made in USA" ratchets. I really like them.

@908Jim -

Not really sure what it is you're asking.
There are literally hundreds of different tool manufacturers in Taiwan.
Taiwan Hand Tool Manufacturers

I cannot speak to Capri.
The "Olsa" brand ratchets get very favorable review here. I know nothing about the product line.
As VolvoRyan stated, "Pittsburgh" brand tools are simply not in the same league with Capri, Olsa, or Tekton. Perhaps more along the line of a "Performance Tool", from the examples I've seen and held.

Tekton makes a respectable product at a reasonable price.
That my buddy prefers using the Tekton set I gave him (as opposed to the Snap-on mashup he cobbled together over the years) should say something.

Or as an alternative, if you're after "cheap sockets", check my ebay listings.

I would worry less about which Taiwan company makes the socket and concentrate more on the individual features of the sockets. Do you want full polished or satin finish? Knurling on the base to aid in finger spinning/socket removal from a drive tool? Are individual open stock sizes available in case I misplace one or I just want an extra 10mm socket? To me, open stock availability is very important.
How's the warranty? Do I have to mail the broken socket in, or can I just you a picture of the broken socket?
I'm not big into warranties because. I don't break a lot of stuff and view a tool warranty as being kind of like a condom, It gives you a false sense of security while you're being screwed It also gives you a lifetime of failed tools
I will also add that most Taiwan 1/4 drive sockets use an overall length of 1 inch whereas, most US manufacturers use 7/8 overall length if that makes a difference to you.
Any of the brands mentioned will serve you well. Tekton & Capri offer reward points that spend like cash on future orders along with free shipping above a set amount. Capri runs sales periodically and Tekton has their outlet section on their website.
I'd also plug OEM tools just for their satin finish with knurling. OP 9

^ That would be a rather daunting task. I suppose if you were IN Taiwan and you spoke Chinese fluently you might be able to find out, but I don't think we can unravel that can of worms with catalogs and a company directory. All of that stuff is outsourced from various manufacturers, and it's all "proprietary" information - meaning they don't tell anybody - it's a big secret - all tangled up in non-disclosure agreements.

There are a couple genres of tools where the OEM manufacturers have been narrowed down to a few - I believe those ratcheting box-end wrenches are one.
But there is no manufacturer anywhere on the planet who is going to tell you from where and from who they're outsourcing stuff from, and the manufacturers who are making the stuff are tangled up in contractual obligations that don't allow them to tell the public who they are selling to.

I don’t think that all modern “Made in Taiwan” tools are the same.

A few decades back, yes, they were all equally bad.

Now, the top end are really good, but ultimately the manufacturers are contactors, so if the customer wants mediocre, or only wants to pay for mediocre, he gets it!

I can go out and find any number of, very generic, Taiwanese sockets, but they will be nowhere near the quality of say a Facom.

UK vs USA markets may be different but here they are pretty much the same, which is actually quite good.

I bought my first tools from HF in the mid s. All of the socket sets were made in Taiwan. And they were excellent. I used them for a few years professionally and I only broke one chrome socket, a 1/4 drive, which I think was just a defect as I know I didn't overly stress it; the replacement has lasted to this day. They transitioned to a mobile use scenario ~10 years ago, and they're still fine. The most used impacts show the use, but all are perfectly functional.

So no, not all Taiwan tools were junk 20+ years ago. Obviously those $4 ratchet and socket sets were junk; but Taiwan could make some good stuff if it was asked for decades ago.

Wow you’re not kidding this set looks great for $62

8-19 shallow and deep, satin, knurling, and 11mm+ sockets have the shouldering at the base so they are easier to take off the ratchet. @908Jim i think this would be hard to beat

Doesn't really matter to me but I have always wondered who makes Pittsburgh & Icon sockets (I don't own the Icons though). I was given Pittsburgh chrome sockets at my current job. I bought Husky & Craftsman for some of the sizes that were missing (none were 10mm). I've been using them everyday with a MW impact driver (3/8). None have ever cracked yet & it's been 7 months. The largest size I use often is 18mm & while it is showing signs of wear from impacting it's still perfectly useable. I also have Pittsburgh hex & torx sockets (non impact) which I also use with the impact driver, they have also surprisingly been holding up fine.

But then again I'm using it with an impact driver so the hex adapter is taking up some of the beating which I have broken a few times (but I kinda know how to avoid that now). And the cars I work on are new/haven't been on the road yet. In the early 00s I did break Snap-on chrome sockets a number of times but that was with a 3/8 IR air impact & my SO dealer didn't care and always exchanged them for me.

I was also given Pittsburgh chrome locking extensions, those don't hold up using with the impact driver. The set screw will come loose pretty quick, red Loctite takes care of that. But eventually they won't lock anymore. HF will exchange them no questions asked but after the second time I won't do it anymore. Haven't broken any standard non-locking chrome extensions yet, not even their wobbles.

Me neither. This is the set they provide for us at work, says made in Taiwan. I'm pretty sure at one point they were made in China or are the ones marked Pittsburgh Pro & non Pro actually different?

I never cared or payed much attention to their sockets & ratchets, I vowed a long time ago to never buy them. They sure have changed my thoughts on their quality some now these days.

Yeah that's pretty wild. I would swear those sets were always China.

Maybe they figured they'd save on shipping or something.

NGL I'd probably go for a Taiwan set.

It always seems to be a back and forth for the Pittsburgh stuff when I look. I tend to find that the impact sockets with the shiny coating come from China, while the matte, more traditional looking impacts, come from Taiwan. I've both sources for the same item on the rack behind each other. It really wouldn't surprise me if HF changes it every time their overall stock gets low and they just contract out whoever gives the cheapest price possible.

Lot of products at HF are sourced from more than one manufacturer, hence why peoples opinions can differ night and day as they got different manufacture/coo tool in their hands .

Can't go too far wrong with taiwan sockets & extensions for the cost and choice on design/finish features .
I've used both chrome and impact taiwan sockets for more than 2 decades in auto repair shop with no drama .
As for Taiwan manufacturer, none tend do the whole manufacture steps in house and some of the most respected specialists are not well known names .
Would like to know who involved on the ICON sockets & pliers ... Last edited: Apr 7,

For a while, they were selling Chinese made stuff as Pittsburgh, and Taiwanese as pittsburgh pro, with a notable difference in quality. that was before the proliferation of the new brands. I've got the color coded pittsburg sockets in my road kit (1/4 and 3/8, shallow and deep). For what I wanted -- a set of sockets that I wouldn't cry over if they get lost or stolen, but good enough to do real work with -- they're fantastic. They're on size, they're relatively low profile, they've taken abuse, the color coding is a big help when you end up with a pile of tools on the ground next to the car. (infuratingly, the 1/4 and 3/8 don't share the same code, so the overlapping sizes have different colors). They're not perfect, of course, (no knurling, for those that care), but they're more than good enough.

the pittsburg ratchets, on the other hand, are garbage. So are the wrenches. and pliers.

I was in store to get something the other day and I was looking at the Pittsburgh Pro sockets and they seem to be identical to the Quinn Sockets for $1/set less. There's well documented differences in the ratchets but I swear the sockets are identical aside from the rolled markings. Go take a look at the Kobalt sets (not the mechanics sets, but strips of sockets) and they appear to be identical to the Quinn sockets with slightly expanded size ranges.

I realize brands can spec different things but I doubt very much that the socket suppliers are changing tooling, steel, or heat treatment from one brand to the next. Their lines are optimized for efficiency (cost) and I'd bet they're simply changing the rolling dies for each run.

Could you give us a little bit more info on what you want out of them. If it’s weekend or monthly warrior, just about anything will work. So just find good deals. Quality used tools are an option as well.

KC Tool has the Heyco deep 1/2” sets being COO of Taiwan instead of Ireland and they look a lot like these. I wonder if Heyco switched to OEM or whatever the manufacturer is.

Do you want full polished or satin finish?
What is the difference? Never crossed my mind.

What might cross my mind these days, is who makes one where you can read the sizes? Giant font. Never tried any but like the idea that harbor frieght has by using colors, wonder why no one else does.

Satin is easier to grip compared to slick polished chrome, especially with oily + gloved up hands. Looks cool, too

the finish is not terribly durable, and looks pretty crappy after a bit. Doesn't hurt function at all, and it's on top of hte chrome, so no rust. Mind you, these have seen some use, and spent a good rattling loose in zipper pouches before I figured out rails that would work for me. (they're from Ernst). IN a drawer, they'd look good longer.

Rotar manufactures some of its own products, and states it produces 15 million pieces a year. Mostly it’s a distributer. By comparison, Apex makes over 1 million sockets a day in addition to the many other tools it manufactures. At one point Stanley was the largest Taiwan manufacturer. Few public records verify which manufactures subcontract and to what extent. In many regards, the Taiwan tool industry is more of an industrial cooperative, then four or five individual companies battling it out as we think of it in Western countries economic systems. Stanley and Apex have a lot of manufacturing capacity and have far greater control over the supply chain then importers and exporters such as Tekton, Ares, Sunex, Topful et al. Many times the best value is found direct from a manufacturer like Stanley or Apex. Last edited: Apr 8,

Although Stanley is among the largest and oldest tool manufactures and addresses the entire worldwide market, competing effectively against Husky, Kobalt, and the house brands of various retailers, worldwide, they also arguably make the best version of pretty much every tool. You won’t do better or at least much better than tool storage by Lista/Vidmar, power tools by Dewalt, hand tools by Proto, Facom, USAG, MAC, some specialty tools by Lenex, Irwin… Lots of good tools from a variety of sources, but I don’t personally see value added by distributors. Sure are lots of great choices, and it’s hard to go wrong these days.

Who Makes the Best Socket Set? (Best Socket Set Brands)

There are several factors that contribute to a brand being among the best brands for socket sets.

  • The quality of the material is certainly one of the most essential factors when it comes to socket sets. The best brands make their products out of chrome vanadium steel, chrome-molybdenum steel, or any type of impact-rated steel.
  • Tolerance is a huge factor. Tolerance in these tools refers to the degree of accuracy with which sockets and ratchets are manufactured. A set with a more accurate tolerance ensures that these tools fit nuts and bolts more precisely and reduces the risk of rounding off fasteners.
  • The best socket sets (Ronix RH-) should also come with the right type of finish to prevent corrosion. A chrome-plated or satin chrome finish offers excellent protection.
  • There are other factors that result in amazing socket sets. These factors include size range, inclusion of deep and shallow sockets, a ratchet with a high tooth count, and ideally extensions and universal joints on the sockets. The best socket sets come in a high-quality, portable, and easily organized carry case. Don’t forget price and affordability.

So, what are the best brands of socket sets? This question is like asking “What is your favorite movie?”. The answer is there are a lot of great ones and each one has their distinct reason for being good.

  • Snap-On is a brand known for its professional-grade hand tools. This brand has a long history and it is the first choice of many automotive professionals and serious enthusiasts. This tool makes some of the best socket sets, famous for their sturdiness and durability.
