Silage wrap | Forum4Farming - Forum4Farming
just wondering what guys are using for bale wrap. We mostly used the John Deere film and then moved to Silawrap and found it ok. A merchant that I contacted this year while pricing around was Quoting for Silawrap but was recommending another product by Zeuss that he recons was a better product and better value for money. He said that all the local farmers and contractors are using the stuff. He was saying that as Silawrap is a 3 layer film that one of the 5 layer films are better. As we wrap at the stack we will be only putting on the 4 layers of film on the bales.
Any thoughts or opinions on what is a good bale wrap?
Regards
There is 2 types of that Zeus stuff, 1 slightly more expensive than the other, €3 per roll I think. I know lads using both and neither have issues. Zeus is a huge worldwide brand but relatively new to the Irish market. Is the more expensive one worth the €3 extra?
Silage Bale Wrap Films: Why Polyethylene Wraps Are the Best for ...
In the world of agriculture, preserving fodder for livestock is a critical task. Ensuring silage stays fresh, nutritious, and well-protected can make or break farming efficiency. Let’s dive into the reasons why polyethylene silage bale wrap films are the ultimate choice for farmers and how they revolutionize agricultural storage.
Understanding Silage Bale Wrap Films: A Farmer’s Best Friend
Silage bale wrap films are stretchable, plastic wraps designed to seal bales of silage, hay, or other fodder. These films work by creating an airtight barrier around the bale, preventing oxygen from entering and ensuring the fodder ferments properly.
Polyethylene, the material used in most high-quality silage wraps, is known for its exceptional strength, elasticity, and weather resistance. But what makes polyethylene wraps stand out in agricultural use?
1. Superior Airtight Seal for Better Preservation
Oxygen is the enemy of silage preservation. Exposure to air causes the fodder to spoil, leading to loss of nutrients and wastage.
- Polyethylene wraps create an airtight seal that prevents oxygen from penetrating the bale.
- This anaerobic environment ensures proper fermentation, retaining the nutritional value of the silage for livestock.
With polyethylene silage wraps, farmers can store fodder for months without compromising its quality.
2. Weather Resistance: Withstanding the Elements
Agriculture often requires storing silage outdoors, where it’s exposed to harsh environmental conditions. Polyethylene silage bale wrap films are specifically designed to withstand:
- UV Rays: Protects bales from sun damage, preventing film degradation over time.
- Rain and Humidity: Keeps moisture out, avoiding the risk of mold and spoilage.
- Freezing Temperatures: Maintains flexibility even in cold climates, ensuring bales remain sealed during winter.
This durability ensures that silage remains protected, no matter the weather.

3. High Stretchability and Tear Resistance
Silage bales come in all shapes and sizes, and wrapping them securely requires a film that can stretch without breaking:
- Stretchability: Polyethylene films can stretch to cover uneven surfaces, ensuring complete coverage.
- Tear Resistance: Even when bales have sharp edges or rough textures, these wraps resist tearing, keeping the seal intact.
The combination of flexibility and strength makes polyethylene wraps ideal for agricultural use.
4. Cost-Effective and Efficient
For farmers, cost-effectiveness is as crucial as performance. Polyethylene silage wraps provide:
- Long-Lasting Durability: Fewer replacements mean reduced expenses over time.
- Long-Lasting Durability: Fewer replacements mean reduced expenses over time.
- Reduced Waste: By preventing spoilage, these wraps minimize fodder wastage, improving the overall value for farmers.
Investing in polyethylene silage wraps is a smart, long-term solution for agricultural operations.
5. Environmentally Friendly Options
Modern polyethylene silage wraps often come with eco-friendly features, aligning with sustainable farming practices:
- Recyclable Materials: Many wraps are designed for recycling, reducing their environmental impact.
- Biodegradable Options: Advanced wraps are now available in biodegradable forms, further supporting green initiatives.
These features ensure that farmers can balance productivity with environmental responsibility.
