News - What is Film Food Packaging?

Film food packaging typically involves an oriented polyester film with a heat-sealed surface that is exposed to very high temperatures. The heat energy is transferred to create a secure and airtight seal for the food. Roll film is a type of packaging film with numerous advantages in the food packaging industry. The main benefit is the cost savings throughout the entire packaging process. The use of roll film in automatic packaging machinery eliminates the need for the packaging production company to perform any edge sealing work; only a one-time edge sealing operation is required. This not only saves time but also reduces labor costs, making it an efficient choice for food packaging companies.

Exploring Flexible Packaging Film Types

Understanding Flexible Packaging Film Types

India is rapidly developing and is home to many industrial revolutions, each bringing us closer to a more convenient future. The packaging industry exemplifies this transformation. With the introduction and success of flexible packaging, the industry is reaching new heights, particularly as e-commerce continues to thrive. The flexible packaging industry has a bright future.

According to the Indian Institute of Packaging (IIP), packaging consumption in India increased by 200% over the past decade, rising from 4.3 kgs to 8.6 kgs per person per annum (pppa). The industry is projected to reach US$ 204.81 billion from US$ 50.5 billion, growing at an annual rate of 26.7%.

For those new to the sector, flexible packaging involves any package made from materials that can yield when filled or closed. It can be easily modified in shape as needed. This type of packaging is used for consumer products and industrial applications. Common examples include bags, pouches, shrink films, tubes, sleeves, and carded packaging.

One fascinating aspect of flexible packaging is the wide range of available options. Each type of flexible packaging material serves a specific purpose in protecting or enhancing the appeal of various products. The different types also come with unique properties, depending on the nature of the product needing packaging. Let's examine the primary flexible packaging film types:

Primary Flexible Packaging Film Types

1. Linear Low-Density Polyethylene (LLDPE):

LLDPE ranks first among plastic sheeting films due to its flexibility. It has an impressive capacity to absorb impact without puncturing or tearing and is an evolved form of LDPE. These films are renowned for their durability and chemical resistance. Common examples include plastic bags, plastic wraps, pouches, toys, covers, lids, pipes, and buckets. They are also used for pond liners, carpet backings, cable coverings, geomembranes, and flexible tubing.

2. Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE):

Introduced as a packaging film in the past, LDPE is a highly flexible and lightweight plastic material. It is a thermoplastic made from the monomer ethylene. LDPE films are known for low-temperature flexibility, durability, corrosion resistance, and chemical and impact resistance. They are easily fabricated using a high-pressure process and are popular in the food packaging industry due to compliance with food safety standards and recyclability. LDPE is used to produce lids for canned products, grocery bags, and plastic wraps.

3. Bi-Axially-Oriented Polypropylene (BOPP):

BOPP films are known for their durability and moisture resistance while providing clarity, making them ideal for retail packaging. They are often complemented with a layer of foil coating for improved performance. Today, BOPP films are commonly used in clear wraps and snack food packaging as well as for pesticide products and personal care items. Their recyclability supports sustainability commitments.

4. Bi-Axially-Oriented Polyethylene (BOPE):

BOPE is ideal for packaging products requiring stiffness. Key features include puncture resistance, heat-seal strength, durability, moisture resistance, and transparency. The production cost of these films is relatively low. BOPE films are widely used for shopping bags, pharmaceutical packaging, and liquids and spices. Being recyclable allows companies to fulfill their sustainability pledges at a minimal cost.

5. Bi-Axially-Oriented Polyethylene Terephthalate (BOPET):

BOPET films, available in white or transparent varieties, were developed in the mid-20th century and are made from stretched polyethylene terephthalate (PET). They are valued for transparency, reflectivity, tensile strength, and gas and aroma barrier properties. BOPET is commonly used as a surface film in laminations, protecting foods against oxidation, which helps preserve aromas and flavors while extending shelf life. Notable examples include coffee foil packaging and pouches for convenience foods.

6. Bi-Axially-Oriented Polyamide (BOPA):

Similar to BOPET, BOPA films exhibit excellent tensile strength and puncture-resistance, with high transparency as a significant asset. They serve as effective barriers against oxygen and certain chemicals. BOPA films are ideal for packaging frozen and cooked foods, vegetables, aquatic products, and various medical and electronic items.

7. Laminates:

Laminated films are common in food packaging; they are used for flavored beverages, sauces, preserved foods, and powders. These films typically have a multi-layer structure, with one polymer film or paper supporting aluminum or metalized films. They provide excellent odor and aroma barriers.
