What is the Difference between Rigid & Flexible Couplings?

Rigid couplings and flexible couplings are both types of grooved fittings that are used to connect pipes and other mechanical components. However, they have some key differences in their design and function.

Rigid couplings connect pipes that are relatively stationary and do not need to be able to move or flex. These couplings are typically made of solid metal or other materials and are designed to provide a strong and secure connection between the pipes.

Flexible couplings, on the other hand, are designed to allow for some movement or flex between the pipes they connect. These couplings are typically made of rubber or other flexible materials and are used in applications where the pipes may need to expand or contract, or where there may be some misalignment between the pipes.

Other differences between rigid and flexible couplings include:

  • Installation: Rigid couplings are generally easier to install than flexible couplings, as they do not require any unique alignment or adjustments. Flexible couplings must be carefully positioned and tightened to ensure a secure connection.

  • Performance: Rigid couplings are generally more efficient and have less resistance to flow than flexible couplings, due to their solid construction. Flexible couplings may cause some restriction or turbulence in the flow of fluid or gas due to their flexible design.

    If you are looking for more details, kindly visit Trust Fluids.

  • Cost: Flexible couplings are generally less expensive than rigid couplings, due to the cost of materials and the simplicity of their design.

In summary, the choice between rigid and flexible couplings will depend on the specific requirements of your application and the factors that are most important to you, such as ease of installation, performance, and cost.

Victaulic/Grooved tube and pipe coupling - Autodesk Community

Hi,

I'm trying to create a new Tube and Pipe Style for Victaulid/grooved pipes and fittings. I downloaded iParts from the Victaulic website, authored them to Tube and Pipe, and published them to content center. Then I copied a Tube and Pipe style to modify it with the new Victaulic parts. The pipe and elbows seem to be working fine but I'm having trouble with the coupling. I need help with the following:

  1. I'm not able to add the coupling to the T&P Style even though it's already published to the CC. I think the issue is the ND. It's set to 2" but the couplings diameter is 2.375" to fit around the pipe. Any ideas on how to resolve this?
  2. How to I ensure that a coupling is inserted in the pipe run in between every fitting/pipe/valve?

If it helps, attached are the iParts that I downloaded from the Victaulic website along with the test run.

Thanks

@ebuenrostro

First a 2 in pipe has a diameter of 2.375..  You don't based the style on the pipe od, its based on the nominal pipe size.   The coupling in the style is solely based on the pipe run exceeding the max pipe length in your style.  If the pipe route exceed that, a coupling is placed to break and connect to pipe runs together to support the length you made  The coupling is not a required fitting for the style.  Will you ever exceed the max pipe length in your style?

@Mark.Lancaster

That makes sense. No, I don't think I would be exceeding the max pipe length in the style. Is there any other way to automatically insert the Vic coupling in between the pipes and fittings? or will I have to do that manually?

@ebuenrostro

Are you talking about the actual Vic clamp to clamp connections together?  If so that has to be done manually.
